Leadership is ultimately about getting a group of people together to accomplish something they would not have otherwise done. Being in Kappa Sigma is one of the best ways to develop this. Our members participate in dozens of events in the community every year and when the event just needs getting done, it’s the Leadership that you learn from interacting with your Brothers and motivating them to do something that gets you a step above the rest. And even if you’re not going into a business management job after college, a strong experience with leadership can help to accomplish just about any task that involves more than one person, even if you’re not the one “in charge.” You will have the experience to know how to get people to communicate effectively and delegate the tasks by those best suited to them so that the goal is accomplished sooner and better than it would otherwise have been done.

You’re in college for an education. Kappa Sigma helps you excel in the classroom. From its earliest beginnings in Renaissance Italy, Kappa Sigma has existed to promote scholarship among its members. Nearly $300,000 is awarded each year by the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund to Brothers who excel in scholarship and leadership. At the chapter level, Brothers help you learn about the campus, provide advice on professors and classes and help you study for those important assignments. (kappasigma.org)

The Delta Omicron chapter strives itself on scholarship. Every member and pledge is expected to achieve the highest grade point average which they are capable. Every member must follow the scholarship requirements of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and The University of Montana. The chapter hosts study tables every week and encourages members to attend as many sessions as possible. Each member must attend at least one study table session a week for the given semester to be in good standing with the Fraternity.

Helping others is part of being a Kappa Sigma. Brothers spend thousands of hours working in their communities and raise thousands of dollars for worthy causes each year. From organizing park clean-ups to serving as Big Brothers to organizing charity events, Kappa Sigmas work hard for their causes. College is fun, but only service gives you the great feeling of knowing you’ve helped someone and made a difference.(kappasigma.org)
 

 
Kappa Sigma also leads other chapters in service to the community and meets, or sometimes well exceeds, its annual goal of 35 hours of community service for each initiate, and logging over 6,000 total hours of community service as a chapter.

Kappa Sigma has initiated more than 240,000 men on college campuses throughout the United States and Canada. Today, the Fraternity has over 175,000 living alumni and more than 14,250 undergraduate members. Delta Omicron Photos

The Delta Omicron chapter at The University of Montana was originally founded May 13th, 1927 but disbanded during the Great Depression. In 2004, Jose′ Diaz along with Matt Ferguson and Kevin Molm decided to bring the honor and glory of Kappa Sigma back to The University of Montana. The chapter was then approved for it’s colony status. The colony then fulfilled the necessary fundraising requirements (Courtesy of President George M. Dennison), University and chapter requirements, volunteer hours, and became the largest fraternity on campus. The Kappa Sigma Fraternity then re-installed the Delta Omicron chapter on May 19th, 2007 and was rewarded with its Charter.

The Kappa Sigma Fraternity states that it is modeled after an extinct order said to have been founded at the University of Bologna in 1400. Founded between 1395 and 1400. According to the traditional story, the corrupt governor of the city, one-time pirate and later papal usuper Baldassare Cossa, took advantage of the students at Bologna, one of Europe’s preeminent universities which attracted students from all over the continent, by sending his men to assault and rob them; this motivated one of the university’s scholars Manuel Chrysoloras to found a secret society of students beginning with five of his most devoted disciples, for mutual protection against Cossa. Modern day Kappa Sigma was founded one chilly evening in the fall of 1869, as five students attending the University of Virginia in Charlottesville gathered in the room of William Grigsby McCormick, at 46 East Lawn, and planted the seed of Brotherhood. For many weeks the bonds of friendship had drawn these five together; now the need became clear for a formal structure to contain their feelings. Thus, not only did the Founders formalize their friendship, but they also created a fraternity steeped in the traditions of the past and dedicated to the Pursuit of Learning. The new brothers recorded their bond in a Constitution and in an Oath that set forth the ideals and principles to all Kappa Sigmas today. (kappasigma.org)
