Colony
On March 5, 2004 after much hard work the interest group officially became a colony of Kappa Sigma. The 25 members at that time were pledged in at the Delta Lambda Chapter House, located at Montana State University in Bozeman. The next stage of the group's journey would prove to be far more difficult.
For over more than three years, the colony worked tirelessly to complete the goals required to receive their charter. In the meantime, the colony also operated as a fully functional fraternity and the newest addition to the UM Greek System. Along with the day to day responsibilities associated with being a UM fraternity, the group worked over time to recruit, develop programs and fund-raise.
The challenges were many, the tasks seemed at times too difficult and the future was uncertain. The fraternity was new and did not have a building to call home. The colony did not have the decades of tradition or alumni support that most other chapters enjoy.
However the pledges of the colony had a “never say die” attitude and would vow to one another to keep working towards the charter until the group persevered. The colony ran all of its meetings on campus, used the internet and databases of the national headquarters to reach out to alumni of other Kappa Sigma chapters for support and the group's members opened up their homes for retreats and various social functions.
Through these efforts the group would recruit over 60 gentlemen before getting chartered, a number that far exceeded what was required.
